Jellybean Benitez – Bio
A giant of New York City club culture during the 1980s, John “Jellybean” Benitez was born in the South Bronx to a Puerto Rican mother. He gravitated toward music at a young age, frequenting disco clubs in the mid-1970s and quickly becoming an established DJ on the scene.
Benitez held a legendary residency at The Fun House in Manhattan from 1981 to 1984, while simultaneously launching a prolific production and remix career. His work helped shape records by artists such as Madonna, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Talking Heads, Hall & Oates, Fleetwood Mac, and many others.
He produced Madonna’s first hit “Holiday” and co-wrote “Sidewalk Talk,” later releasing his debut album Just Visiting This Planet in 1987.
Though he kept a lower profile during the 1990s, Benitez remained active as a DJ and tastemaker. Today, he is widely regarded as a key figure in the evolution of NYC nightlife, bridging the disco era into modern dance culture and pioneering the freestyle genre.
Benitez continues to perform internationally and is currently launching his latest project, a vinyl-focused record store and cultural space called Jellybean’s Funhouse in Fort Lauderdale.
