Teddy Douglas is an important figure in the development of the Baltimore “House” sound. In 1985, he met Jay Steinhour and Thommy Davis, who later went on to form The Basement Boys production company.
What do Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Crystal Waters, Erykah Badu, Martha Wash, and Ultra Naté all have in common? Teddy Douglas has produced for all of them. The Baltimore native DJ/producer began his DJ career professionally in 1983 at the hottest clubs in the Baltimore–D.C. area and continues to this day. From Japan’s famed Yellow to London’s Ministry of Sound, Teddy has wowed global audiences and held down the legendary Paradox club in Baltimore for years. His long-running “Salvation” party is 14 years strong. He also co-hosts the bi-annual “Respekt” party with DJ Spen and Karizma.
In the mid-’90s, Teddy and Jay Steinhour launched Basement Boys Records, home to club anthems from artists like Francesso The Violin, Jasper St. Co. featuring Ann Nesby, Those Guys, Kenny Bobien, and Taja Sevelle. Their 1991 gold single “Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee, La Da Da)” remains a dance classic and has been sampled by Mary Mary, Pitbull, and T.I.
In November 2024, Teddy released his debut solo artist album I’m Here on Nervous Records — an eclectic mix of house, funk, rock, and jazz across 11 tracks. Collaborators include Fast Eddie, Ultra Naté, Pauline Taylor, Richard Farrell, BDI Thug (Buckshot), and rising UK soul talent Sipho.
Highlights include “House Music” with Fast Eddie, “Searching (For Your Love)” with Ultra Naté, and a soulful cover of “Don’t Turn Your Back On Me” featuring Pauline Taylor. From deep house bangers to downtempo soul-rock hybrids, I’m Here showcases the full range of Teddy’s musical genius — a landmark release from one of Baltimore’s finest.
