A Wiggly Story
It all started in the basement of li’ly lounge on January 11, 2014, with the very first Wiggly “Beats” party.
Let’s rewind a few months and tell you all about how the word Wiggly came to be. It’s a love story. You see, Takin and Lindsay, whom you all know as “Captain & Madame Wiggle” or, to some, “Mom & Dad,” had met earlier in 2013, and it was in the early stages of the two’s relationship when TAKiN invited Lindsay to attend one of his DJ gigs. Standing behind the DJ booth and watching him bounce behind the decks, Lindsay whispered in his ears: “I love the way you wiggle, baby.” The phrase quickly became a symbol of affection between the two, as they would send messages or call each other asking, “How’s your wiggle?” that also led the way to use the wiggly symbol: “How’s your ~~~~?”.
Born out of love, Wiggly Events is a beautiful result of the two’s passion for music, dancing, and arts and fundamentally carries the two’s strong support of equality, universality, and love.Hosting events in non-traditional locations such as abandoned buildings, warehouse spaces, movie theatres, Cherry Beach, and so on, along with the combination of excellent music curation and inclusion of various mediums of art performances, helped Wiggly Events quickly gain the reputation for hosting unique shows at weirdly unique locations that attracted a very different audience from the typical party or night club scene.
Attracting such lovely and talented people where everyone quickly became great friends helped build community among the regular attendees. As the events became more frequent and the number of attendees grew, the next natural step was to begin an annual gathering where this community would come together, play, have fun, and dance.
With this, Camp Wiggly (formerly known as Playground) was started, where, for one weekend, the Wiggly community gathers to celebrate arts, laughter, dancing, and love.Finding locations for these non-traditional multidisciplinary arts shows has become more complex and challenging in recent years. As the city (of Toronto) was battling a loss of many music and arts venues, it was clear that a Wiggly community centre was needed as a permanent home for these shows, to provide a safer dance space for everyone, and to provide the space and platform where local artists can flourish. After months of searching, we found today’s location of Wiggly headquarters. Although COVID put plans on pause for some time, Wiggle Room officially opened its doors in September 2021, starting the new chapter of the Wiggly team.
For the tenth anniversary of Wiggly Events, we have invited a few DJs who have played a significant role in helping this community grow. Although so many artists and volunteers have dedicated so much love and passion to this community, and we wish we could include a few more acts, due to time restraints, here are a few DJs that have helped shape our reputation for having the wiggliest, bounciest, beats for the past ten years:
TAKiN – Captain Wiggle himself, founder of Wiggly Events and curator of the music/DJs you hear at all the parties. It is his passion for art and music that navigates this ship.
Luis F – our first resident DJ. From early on, Luis joined the wiggly family by bringing his decks to the party. Takin had the speakers, and Luis had the DJ gear. Together, they were complete.
Barroness – Christina was a significant supporter of TAKiN’s music from before the inception of the Wiggly Events parties. Before she joined the team as one of the resident DJs, she was (still is) one of the more prominent promoters and hosts for Wiggly Events. It was a no-brainer for her to play every Wiggly party since she picked up DJing.
Tyler Hill – officially joined the Wiggly team after COVID ended, and the new chapter started with the opening of Wiggle Room. His outstanding talents as a DJ, producer, and all-around wonderful human have helped establish Wiggle Room as one of Toronto’s most respected music venues.
George Loukas – veteran DJ and music producer, successful label owner, a supporter of house music, and a dear friend of Takin who greatly supported and guided him early on the first few years of this journey.
1lvl1 Crew DJs – it began with Paolo and Pietro (resting in peace) who believed in the inclusive philosophy of Wiggly Events. They have been supporting and DJing these parties for many years, and although the collective has grown over the years, 1lvl1 has maintained a great deal of love and support for these events.
Our Notable Staff – although so many wonderful people have contributed to the many events over the years, here are a few names that deserve a shout-out for the years of dedicated support and helping build these gatherings to what they have become: Dr. Hoo(man) who believed in Takin’s vision and greatly supporting him from the first day, without his support, non of these would have been possible; Nour; KDust; Markus; Joe; Chad; Meghan; Rouzbeh; Aleks; Amir Nian; Stien; Cheryl; Iman; Mitch; Spencer; Ryan Longo; Tanya; Maria; Oli(ver); and many more.
Join us for our DecaDance. Warm up with some mixes.
